Happy St. Paddy’s Day, friends. Just because we’re holed up at home doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. The kids and I enjoyed eating our traditional “green cuisine” for lunch today. On the menu this year: green bean casserole, spinach ravioli, Granny Smith apples, green grapes, Cobb salad, dill pickles, and a big bowl full of kisses (we’re part Irish, after all) wrapped in green foil. ☘️ Mama, in these uncertain times, your kids will be taking their cues from you more than ever. Let’s not give in to anxiety, fear, and worry. We’ve got plenty to be thankful for. Let’s focus on today’s blessings and leave tomorrow’s concerns at the foot of the cross, where they belong. 🙏🏻
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6
❤️
"And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life's span? “If then you cannot do even a very little thing, why do you worry about other matters?” Like 12:25-26

Abby spends most of her time surrounded by brother Abby spends most of her time surrounded by brothers and nephews, playing for-square, kickball, and capture the flag. Or jumping bicycle ramps. Or participating in push up or arm wrestling competitions. 💪🏻
But every so often, the guys take a break from their roughhousing to help her throw a tea party. ☕️

Doug: “It’s Valentine’s Day? I guess I should’ve bought you some flowers.”
Me: “You did! Don’t they look beautiful? I arranged them myself.”

It was “Heroes v. Villains Day” at Cottage Gar It was “Heroes v. Villains Day” at Cottage Garden (our homeschool co-op) today. Isaac was up half the night putting finishing touches on his Darth Vader costume. He sewed the soft parts out of pleather and constructed the helmet and armor out of recycled cardboard and paper mache. 💡
I pressed hubby’s old army uniform into service to dress up as my all-time favorite hero. ❤️ Was a little surprised I could squeeze into it, as we’ve both packed on a few pounds since his days as a reservist. 🇺🇸

One of the best places to shop for one-of-a-kind s One of the best places to shop for one-of-a-kind souvenirs on your travels? Secondhand shops! We found this adorable little dirndl for Abby at a fraction of what new ones cost. 🛍
Fortunately, some of my kids are even bigger fans of thrifting than I am (which is saying a lot). The girls found shops in several of the cities we visited. 🏫🕌💒
Other fun finds: a handmade lace doily (75¢), a Vera Pelle Italian leather purse ($4), and 2 pretty china plates for me ($1 ea); a thick cotton sweater (10¢) and a floral print blouse ($3) for Rachel; a pair of lace-trimmed denim shorts (12¢), a beautiful vintage suit (25¢), and a jigsaw puzzle ($1) for Abby — just to name a few. 🧩👜👒

A sampling of the items on display in the Tyrolean A sampling of the items on display in the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum in Innsbruck. There were lots of beautiful tole painted items, intricate wood carvings, delicate handmade lace and crewel embroidered work, plus an entire wing devoted to highly detailed nativity sets. 🐑 🐑 🐑
There were also a few displays of things I would not want decorating the walls of my house, such as skeletons, headdresses, and a waxen model of John the Baptist’s head on a platter. 🎭
Daniel: “What’s up with all the creepy masks in this place?”
Dad: “Those are for parents to wear when putting kids to bed at night.”

We made it home safely from our travels, but our I We made it home safely from our travels, but our Internet was spotty abroad, so I’ll be posting a few more memories before I’m done. 📸
One of my favorites was the Tyrolean evening we spent with the Gundolf family. They fed us a delicious traditional meal of schnitzel and strudel, then entertained us with beautiful and lively folk music and dances. 🎻
I quickly lost count of how many unique instruments they played. Here’s a small taste. (Wish there were some way I could give you a taste of that yummy apple strudel, as well!)
